For our Capython group exercise, Kirsten and I were in charge of illustrating the entire video for our chosen topic. Together, we developed a cohesive visual style, and I led the illustration work—bringing the script to life through custom drawings and animated scenes that matched the tone and message of our project.
CLIENT: Capybara
PROJECT GOAL: To illustrate our topic that we were given, "Building respect for diversity and removing barriers to racial and social equity."
PROJECT OUTCOME: The goal of this animated video was to communicate the importance of building respect for diversity and breaking down barriers
to racial and social equity. Through thoughtful illustration and animation, we aimed to create a clear, inclusive, and engaging visual narrative
that sparks reflection and encourages action. The final outcome is a visually expressive piece that not only educates but also resonates emotionally
with viewers—promoting awareness, empathy, and meaningful conversation.
PROJECT TIMELINE: 1 WEEK
When words divide, visuals unite. This project showed us how illustration and animation can speak across cultures, spark empathy, and help build a world where everyone feels seen.
Inconsistent Creative Direction
Lack of Collaborative Cohesion
Technical Learning Curve
Here are a few early concept sketches that evolved into final assets for our animated video, showcasing how Kirsten and I collaborated on both background and character design. Together, we also developed the storyline, defined the characters, established the visual style, and coordinated roles—including voiceover assignments—to ensure a cohesive final production.
By this stage, Kirsten and I had finalized all of our illustrations and locked in the plot. From there, we moved into the most challenging phase: bringing everything to life through animation. Neither of us had created a full-length animated video before, and I had never animated anything prior to this project—so naturally, there was a lot of uncertainty. But we tackled every obstacle as a team. I had to adapt quickly, learning animation tools and techniques on the fly. It was a real-world design experience—being handed a task you're unfamiliar with, pushing past the fear of failure, and committing to growth through the process. This project taught me that creativity isn’t just about skill—it’s about problem-solving, resilience, and collaboration under pressure.
Check out the final video below, which I’m really proud of. It’s a testament to what we can achieve when we embrace challenges, learn from each other, and stay committed to our vision!
